[Casper, WY] – [November, 20, 2024] – Flowstate, a leader in pipeline monitoring technology, has been awarded a research grant through the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration’s (PHMSA) Pipeline Safety Research Program. The grant, part of the Core Research FY24 Solicitation RA10, will support the development of a new leak detection system designed for pipelines transporting complex hydrocarbon products such as natural gas, NGLs, LPG, and olefins.
Pipelines are vital for transporting essential resources across the U.S. including various hazardous liquids Strides have been made to improve the safety of this network, but work continues to close gaps and find more reliable, cost-effective means. For this reason, the Office of Pipeline Safety at PHMSA awards grants to promote research and development. The Core Research FY24 Solicitation identified several areas of focus including leak detection and liquified natural gas. The complexities of some fluids and gases has made the a challenge for both the industry and regulators. Flowstate has successfully applied machine learning to other hazardous liquid lines (crude, produced water, C02), but is aiming to extend the technology to compressible fluids. The goal is to provide enhanced, real-time monitoring for these lines in a way that is affordable and does not require extensive upgrades to infrastructure such as sensors.
A key aspect of Flowstate’s project will be data gathering and field testing. Flowstate will be working with identified industry partners to leverage their expertise, gather operational data for research and potentially utilize their pipelines for testing.
“Our team is thrilled to partner with PHMSA on this project,” said Flowstate Chief Technology Officer Braden Fitz-Gerald. “Compressible fluids are a complex problem The unique challenges are so great that the solutions available heretofore have been limited. We are excited to work with our project partners to investigate the ability of new technologies like deep learning to help enable an improved solution”
Once developed, the new leak detection system will be integrated into Flowstate’s existing Leak Detection System, enabling operators to monitor pipeline integrity more effectively. It will also enhance operational efficiency and help operators meet regulatory standards.
